A few winemakers like Aldo Vacca and Giovanni Gaja havec come out and declared 2021 to be the best vintage of the millennium so far, standing shoulder to shoulder with iconic years like 2010, 2013, and 2016.

 

Why is 2021 viewed to be a standout vintage?

 

2021 benefited from a long, slow ripening period, with warm August and September days leading to a later than usual harvest. Small, concentrated berries with a perfect skin-to-juice ratio have resulted in a wine with classic Nebbiolo floral elegance, scalpel-like precision, and remarkable structural balance.

 

I’ve been a huge fan of Produttori del Barbaresco for year now. Under the guidance of Aldo Vacca they continue to deliver top class wines, consistently year after year. To quote Ian D’Agata ‘the single best quality-conscious collective of growers in the world’.

 

The 2021 Barbaresco is a prime example of this and coming in at sub $430 per 6x75cl case. It is one of the best value 2021 releases available.

Showing a super bright piercing aromatics of pressed red cherry, saline black berries and tart cranberry fruit complexity with fragrant undertones of polished mahogany, damp earth and a delicately herbal, floral potpourri spice melange. The palate is sleek, fulsome and absolutely brimming with tart juicy red and black Nebbiolo fruits that support an incredibly tight, fine grained tannin structure, with notes of cherry cola and pink rock candy, finishing with a sleek, sumptuous, supple sappy mineral persistence. This cooler vintage has delivered a Produttori del Barbaresco expression that surpasses possibly even some of the previous non-declared / declassified Cru Barbaresco expressions where all nine Crus were blended together into the Barbaresco normale. A simply spectacular, mouth watering wine once again.
