It seems strange to thing about Bordeaux in the current heat, but being from the UK I cannot help but associate the Christmas and New Year period with wines from this region.

I notice that earlier in the year there are occasional drops in Bordeaux prices ahead of the next En Primeur release

This is a prime example of that. We have sourced a very small number of cases (6 total) of Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux 2020. A absolute stonker of a second wine, which out performs most other classified growths.

The much talked about 2020 Bordeaux vintage.

The 2020 vintage in Margaux is hailed as a modern classic, delivering wines of remarkable concentration, elegance, and aging potential.

A challenging growing season began with a warm, wet spring that promoted rapid vine growth and required vigilant disease management. This was followed by a hot, arid summer that produced small, intensely flavored grapes, with terroir playing a crucial role in sustaining the vines through the drought.

The September harvest, marked by scattered light rains, allowed producers to pick at optimal ripeness. The resulting wines are rich and complex, showcasing layers of dark and red bramble fruits, spice, and earthy notes, framed by firm yet polished tannins and refreshing acidity, making 2020 a standout year for Margaux.

There are 6 cases (6x75cl) available – coming in @ under $425/bottle. Cheaper than anywhere else in Australia, and currently cheaper than the release price.

I’ll leave with a couple of tasting notes

97 Points – James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, May 2023

“Subtle and attractive aromas of blackcurrants and flowers with hints of spices. Black truffles as well. Medium to full body, with fine tannins that are nicely integrated and racy. Succulent at the end. Umami, too. Drinkable but better after 2027.”

17+ Points – James Lawther MW, JancisRobinson.com, April 2021

“75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc. 31% of the production. Cask sample.Pron ounced fruit and freshness with finely matted, powdery tannins that provide elegance and a suavity of texture. Aromatic and juicy on the finish. Medium to long ageing potential. (JL) 13.6% Drink 2027 – 2040”

93 Points – Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, The Wine Independent, March 2023

“A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux is deep garnet-purple colored. It flows gently out of the glass with notes of black cherries, kirsch, and black raspberries, giving way to classic cassis, pencil shavings, and tar scents with a touch of lavender. The medium-bodied palate is finely knit and elegant, with seamless freshness and a compelling, grainy-textured, earth-laced finish.”
