The Vintage at Pichon Baron

2017 was a year of challenges in Bordeaux, with frost impacting several appellations. Pichon Baron, however, was largely spared, with only a small percentage of its plots affected. The growing season delivered a dry start, a mild spring and a warm summer, followed by a cooler, wetter September that required meticulous vineyard work. Merlot was harvested from 18–21 September, while Cabernet Sauvignon came in from 27 September to 3 October. Gentle extraction and 18 months in 80% new oak have produced a wine of precision, freshness, and classic Pauillac structure.

The Wine

A blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Merlot, Pichon Baron 2017 shows an intense Pauillac character: cassis, graphite and cedar aromas lead to a medium-to-full-bodied palate of refined structure and silky yet firm tannins. The finish is long, elegant, and perfumed.
